KU Endowment provides $119.4 million in support for KU in fiscal 2013

October 1, 2013

KU Endowment provided $119.4 million in direct financial support for the University of Kansas in fiscal 2013, which ended June 30. These funds are used according to donors’ specifications. The support benefited all of KU’s campuses and The University of Kansas Hospital.

At KU, philanthropy touched every aspect of the institution, helping to enhance its reputation. It enabled support for students in the form of scholarships and fellowships; faculty salaries, including professorships; academic programs in all disciplines; promising research; artistic performances; and facilities, including library and museum acquisitions.

“We’re proud to be able to provide the margin of excellence for KU,” said Dale Seuferling, president of KU Endowment. “The generosity of our donors helps make KU a world-class institution. Virtually every student, faculty member and researcher at KU benefits in some way from private philanthropy.”

At The University of Kansas Hospital, private support funded new facilities and technology for patient care; provided opportunities for staff education; and established new patient support programs. Private philanthropy fully funded the development and implementation of a new cancer disease-site nurse navigation program, which positions the hospital as a national leader in delivering personalized care to patients at The University of Kansas Cancer Center.

Each year, KU Endowment transfers income from endowed funds, along with expendable gifts, in accordance with donors’ intent. Endowed funds are invested collectively in the Long-term Investment Program, which includes more than 3,300 individual fund accounts. The Long-term program returned 10.9 percent in fiscal year 2013, pushing the market value of endowed funds to $1.29 billion. The program’s goal is to provide a consistent level of support for KU in perpetuity.

KU Endowment is the independent, nonprofit organization serving as the official fundraising and fund-management organization for KU. Founded in 1891, KU Endowment was the first foundation of its kind at a U.S. public university.
