Former Sen. Bob Dole makes gift to Spine Center

February 18, 2009
Former Kansas Senator Robert Dole has made a $150,000 contribution for clinical research at the Marc. A. Asher, MD, Comprehensive Spine Center at The University of Kansas Hospital.

“As someone who received serious spinal injuries as a result of wounds in World War II, I am conscious of how important the work being done at the Marc A. Asher, MD, Comprehensive Spine Center is. I support their groundbreaking research and studies. I hope my contribution advances knowledge and innovation in this area and helps others recognize their work, which could affect literally millions of patients who suffer from back problems, spinal injuries and illnesses,” said Senator Dole.

Dole has made previous gifts to the medical center for cancer. His gift was made to the Kansas University Endowment Association.

“We are very excited about Senator Dole’s gift,” said Douglas Burton, MD, orthopedic surgeon and a leader of the multidisciplinary spine center. Burton said the research projects through the University of Kansas Medical Center have yet to be identified, but he hoped projects will be able to begin this year.

“Right now, clinical research is where there is real potential to benefit patients quickly. The spine center is a perfect vehicle to pursue clinical research and this is the kind of support that is needed to get the ball rolling,” said Burton.

The multidisciplinary Marc A. Asher, MD, Comprehensive Spine Center brings together orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, neurologists, psychiatrists, pain management anesthesiologists and rehabilitative medicine under one roof. A key to the approach is the introduction of a “spineologist,” a specialist who evaluates each patient’s condition and medical history before making diagnosis and treatment recommendations. The spineologist assembles the most appropriate team of specialists for each patient.
