Tradition of Excellence Award

Create a permanent legacy. No matter the size, the benefit of your individual gift is far-reaching and long-lasting. There are two ways to support scholarships: the Student Endowment Board’s Tradition of Excellence Award and endowed scholarships.

Student Endowment Board's Tradition of Excellence Award

The Tradition of Excellence Award is awarded to University of Kansas students who are dedicated to upholding the prestige and history of the students who came before them and who wish to continue carving a path of distinction for the future. Often seen as visionaries and leaders among their peers, these students strive to contribute to the development and ongoing success of the University of Kansas. Whether they enrich the learning of others by serving as a teaching assistant, dedicate themselves to their chosen student organization, donate their time through service to the Lawrence community or just enjoy being the captain of the dorm’s intramural team, these students actively and positively enhance the KU community through several different avenues. They all have one common goal: leaving their positive, everlasting legacy at the University of Kansas. Funding for this award is provided by philanthropic activities of the Student Endowment Board, as sponsored by KU Endowment.

The 2019 Tradition of Excellence Awards were given to twelve deserving student leaders in April 2019. Stay tuned for application information for 2020.

Contributions given as a current gift are funds that will be used to meet the needs within the current fiscal year. Current gifts to the Student Endowment Board’s Tradition of Excellence Award provide immediate benefits to students when the scholarships are awarded each spring. Current gifts are usually raised by the Student Endowment Board events and activities; however, you also can make your gift online.

Endowed Scholarships
An endowed fund can make your influence last for generations. These funds support students in perpetuity or over an extended period of time, depending on your specifications. When you endow a fund, you can name it after yourself, or name it to honor and pay tribute to mentors or loved ones. For a student award, you can establish an endowed fund with a minimum $10,000 gift. For endowed scholarships, the minimum gift is $50,000. To move forward, you may choose to:
  • support the KU General Scholarship Fund or an existing named endowment fund;
  • or create an endowed scholarship fund in your own name or in tribute to someone. You may fund your endowment over a period of five years, and when the fund reaches $50,000 it will begin providing assistance.
